Because wood is a jeopardized resource, I attempt to create without waste, always keeping in mind the energy, strength, and actual fiber of its uniqueness.
Fascination with wood and a sense it should be honored became the central theme for my Remainders series. Most of the materials for this series came from the corners of my studio, carefully sorted boxes of scraps, roadside finds, and discards of a local millworks.
Remnants I: Sphere is a key piece in the Remainders Series. I created Sphere from discarded ends donated by Guida Woodworks, a manufacturing company in Flagstaff, Arizona. I was grateful for free access to this fine hardwood. I was also sobered by the awareness that most of the time this “residue” is simply burned. The Guida Wall, Phoenix, and Bleed I & II were also created from this material.
As a result of using collected scrap wood, I began experimenting with building small pieces limited to the confines of a 4”x4”x4” transparent box. I soon included all manner of mixed media in this investigation of prescribed space.
